Every organisation has a purpose. It’s why you started out. What gets you out of bed every morning. Sometimes it’s to make a profit. Other times it’s to make a difference. We find the heart of that purpose and, through creative thinking, give it a life of its own.

A lifetime of life

Cravens was founded in 1946 in Newcastle’s (in)famous Bigg Market and, depending on who you ask, is the oldest independent advertising agency in the UK.

Tales are told of the agency’s involvement in the iconic blue star of the Scottish and Newcastle Brewery (as seen on the Newcastle Brown Ale bottle) and the Fairy Liquid Baby, but usually only after a few pints. We enjoyed a 30 year relationship with Northern Rock, from its transformation from small regional building society into a leading FTSE 100 Bank, through its role in the ‘credit crunch’ and its subsequent rejuvenation with Virgin Money. More recently we spent a decade promoting the tigers and gorillas at London Zoo, rebranded the global sport of rowing, got the nation dancing to the tune of Gala Bingo and had the chance to work with the world’s only 7star hotel, the Burj Al Arab in Dubai.

Not bad for a 70 year old.

A lifetime of life

Old clients from the 60s and 70s still occasionally pop in to our new building, surprised and delighted that ‘their agency’ is still going strong, a testament to the relationships we strive to build and the work we do. Work built on a drive to turn our client’s needs into creative actions that make a positive difference to their customers, colleagues and communities.

Phil Coverdale

Managing Director

A Managing Director with the heart of a Planner, Phil steers our company and its strategic direction. As a Planning Director at Universal McCann his key accounts included Microsoft, Xbox, MSN, T-Mobile and Black and Decker. These days he can be found masterminding our brand projects for Grand Central, Gala Coral, Virgin Money, World Rowing and LR Senergy.

Jeremy Nickalls

Business Director

Relationship master Jeremy has managed a wide variety of well-known clients in his long history at Cravens (20 years and counting!). Working with famous names like Scottish Rugby Union, Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS), Northern Rock, First Group, ZSL London Zoo, Gala Coral, The Football League and the RFL (Rugby Football League).

Melanie Schouw

Business Director

As Cravens' Business Director, Melanie brings a wealth of experience having previously worked as Group Business Director of TMW in London. Her extensive client CV includes a range of major accounts such as Virgin Trains and Virgin East Coast, Sainsbury’s, O2, MBNA, Oxfam, Direct Line and Virgin Money.

Andy Lovatt

Head of Creative

Whether it’s film, animation or motion graphics, if it moves, our Head of Creative Andy Lovatt can make it look amazing. With a pedigree broadcast background that includes the Horror Channel, ITV and CBS, Andy is responsible for the editing, animation, production and delivery of our creative output.

Stephen Carroll

Creative Director

Creative Director and Senior Writer at Cravens, Steve overseas the conceptual output of Cravens. Obsessed with ideas (well, only the good ones), he brings his concept and copy skills to bear on key accounts like Virgin Money, ZSL London Zoo, First Group, Northern Rock, 32Red and the Rugby Football League.

Mike Smith

Studio Head

With over 25 years in the design industry, 20 of them at Cravens, Mike has forgotten more than most people know about print and design. Heading up our studio, he ensures that finished artwork for clients like World Rowing, Virgin Money and First Group leaves the building looking its best, before it hits the big wide world.

Ian Sidaway

Digital Director

Sid is a web designer with a strong focus towards front-end design, accessibility and usability. He's worked on high-profile accounts such as Ladbrokes, Regus, World Rowing and Virgin Money, and had his work has been covered in a number of print publications over the years.
